Keeping your Gut Happy!!
So many people are becoming more health conscious these days, but to become more versed in food, you may have to do your homework. For example, do you know the difference between probiotics and prebiotics?
PROBIOTICS AND PREBIOTICS
Most of us know about probiotics, and think about kefir or yogurt as the best sources. Both are a great source to get some needed food for your digestive track.
But do you know about prebiotics? They are foods that also help with the gut. Garlic, onions and artichokes are 3 good examples.
To give yourself a bit of a detox, and get rid of all those inner gut problems, eating more yogurt can help, but those prebiotics can also help a lot with your digestion.
Repairing yourself means providing some nutritional support for healing your gastrointestinal lining says Elson Haas in his book, The New Detox Diet. But prevention is always the key. When you eat right by eating nutritionally dense foods, your body thanks you, and your gut feels good.
Those bacteria in probiotics really help, but as we age, natural protection decreases, especially if you use a lot of antibiotics. People prone to infection of the gut find that they have an imbalanced flora. You can find probiotics in capsule form, or you can use cultured yogurt or milk products that contain some Lactobacilli species.
Herbs can also help- aloe vera, licorice root and marshmallow root are good examples of herbs helpful for the gut.
Vitamins that help: Vitamin A, C, E, Zinc along with Selenium ( antioxidant)
and Quercetin a bioflavonoid.
For more prebiotics- Prebiotics are indigestible Carbohydrates. They can protect you from colon cancer.
Any dietary component that reaches the colon intact is prebiotic.
More examples of prebiotic foods for you to eat to help your gut:
whet, bananas, soybeans, and various fiber derivatives.
