One of the best things that I have done through the years of my life – practicing yoga and meditation.
Yoga has been with me for many years, but meditation is a recent adventure that I want to continue for the rest of my life.
I just dabbled in meditation and really focused on yoga for almost 30 years. But today, due to my recent discovery that learning to meditate may help me get in touch with my inner being more effectively, has been my self- encouragement to practice it more.

During the many stressful times in my life, I have used both modalities to help me. The yoga practice has given me more strength, balance and a way to catch my breath. By catching my breath, I mean, centering and balancing myself so that I can deal with things that come up in life.

Hatha Yoga

This is my favorite type of yoga because it focuses on the poses and the breath. You stay in a pose for about 15 breaths and you learn to inhale when you rise, and exhale when you lower. This combination of the strengthening poses such as warrior, with the balances such as tree and eagle, have helped me to grow strong and centered. The breathing exercises such as breathing in for 1,2,3,4,5, and breathing out for 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 have helped me to slow down my breath and get the toxins out of my being. When you are conscious of your breath, you begin to realize that you have control of everything about your being, including how you react to things. You can react more peacefully by slowing down your breath every time that you need to.

Yin Yoga

The newest yoga that I have been practicing is Yin yoga. This is why I have become more focused on my meditative practicing.

When you practice Yin yoga, you stay in your poses for 5 minutes. This creates a sense of meditative posing that allows you to focus on your breath, and clearing your mind. You become part of the pose.

Meditation and Stillness

Your focal point or Mantra can be your breath.  It can be a soft sound that you feel inside.

You concentrate on breathing in and out, slower and slower.

You are sitting crossed legged, with your hands open. Your eyes look down or close… You are concentrating on being still in mind and body.

Beginning a meditation practice does not have to be difficult. It does not have to be done in any particular way. Just be, wherever you are. That is where you should be in your practice of any new skill.
