Can we get Natural Estrogen in the Foods we eat?

For people who may be going through “the change” as my mother called it (menopause), you can take a look at this article on foods high in estrogen.

There are of course some concerns with having too much estrogen such as seen in some research related to breast cancer and the use of Hormone Replacement Therapy, HRT. So if you can breast cancer in your family, you may not want to increase your estrogen levels too much.

What is estrogen?

Estrogens are a group of compounds that are found in many humans and animals. For the most part, they are the female sex hormone.

The major type of naturally occurring estrogens with steroids are estrone, estradiol and estroil – also known as E1, E2, E 3.

Phytoestrogens are the products of plants while mycoestrogens are produced by fungi.

Here are some foods containing natural estrogen

Alfalfa, apples, beets, carrots, cherries, clove, cucumbers, dates, eggs, eggplants, fennel, garlic, hops, olive oil, papaya, peas, peppers, plums

There are some foods with natural estrogens which ar rich in glutamine: animal flesh, barley, chickpeas, dairy foods, flax-seeds, oats, red beans, sesame seeds, soybeans, sunflower seeds.

If a person is suffering from breast cancer, fibroids, or ovarian cysts, there are some etrogen inhibiting foods too: berries, broccoli, buckwheat, cabbage, wheat, grapes, green beans, pears

Estrogen: Helpful in Disease

Foods with estrogens are helpful in diseases such as epilepsy and pain management. During menopause, women suffer from low levels of estrogen. Therefore, foods with with  estrogen can be helpful with symptoms.

Many doctors suggest that women should take foods with phytoestrogens during menopause. As always, ask your doctor before starting new foods in your diet because foods with estrogen may be beneficial or harmful depending on your condition and the intake amount of the food.

Everything in moderation is the key to being healthy!

Turning to Drugs

Often women who are suffering from menopausal symptoms turn to drugs such as hormonal agents when there are some alternatives to try first!
